Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
