The minister explained that the MoD is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a issue in every contemporary vehicles.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, due to the growing risks of surveillance that exist in every single automobile, to restrict those secret talks in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the moment.”

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to switch off public transport and bring disruption to transport systems.
