Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened just after 2am on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a practice session on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
