Manchester United Set to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
The forward, with half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Building Steam at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when the club appear to be gathering momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
