No McKenna Celtic Talks as Bellamy Commits to Wales
Kieran McKenna and Wales head coach have been linked with the Scottish champions vacancy
Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna declares he has had "no conversations" with Celtic about their coaching position, while Wales head coach the former striker is dedicated to seeing out his squad's international campaign.
Both have been linked with the manager's job at the Scottish champions following Brendan Rodgers' departure on Monday.
McKenna's Position on Celtic
McKenna described Celtic as "a really big soccer institution" but emphasized he is "in the middle" of a "long-term project" with the Championship side.
The 39-year-old assumed control of Portman Road in recent years and led them to the Premier League with back-to-back promotions, but they managed only four games last season as they were relegated back to the Championship and they presently occupy 12th in the Championship.
"I have not had such discussions," the London-born ex- Irish young player said when asked about being on Celtic's shortlist.
"It's not something I have considered seriously, or where any part of my focus is currently.
"I have a special position here at a remarkable club. And we're at a crucial stage of the season. Everything external hasn't reached my radar."
Context and Contractual Details
It has been suggested that the manager would be open to speaking to Celtic given his childhood support.
"During youth, we all have our affinities," he said when asked about those. "I don't think everyone has to go around and announce what they used to be, but naturally it's a really big sports organization."
The coach signed a fresh multi-year deal in 2024 and was questioned about his alleged buyout clause.
"In every manager's contract, there are provisions," he replied. "I don't know what mine are and, if I did, I wouldn't tell you anyway!
"I tackle this role like I'll be Ipswich manager indefinitely. I know that's not invariably going to be the case, but I will consistently give maximum effort as while I am here."
Bellamy's Situation
The former striker played for the Hoops on loan from Newcastle United in 2005, but the ex- Welsh striker is minded to complete the current global tournament qualification, a position that would effectively rule out the 46-year-old from immediately taking the Celtic job.
The Welsh squad are presently third in their World Cup group behind group toppers Belgium and second-placed Macedonia.
Wins over Liechtenstein and their rivals in next month would book their place in the final qualifying round, but they are all but assured of reaching that stage, due to a successful European competition campaign, should they fail to finish as Group J second place.
Considering his present stance, Bellamy, whose agreement concludes after the European Championship, would not be available until after the qualifying matches at the minimum.
